A leadership crisis has erupted within the Keffi Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, as a group of members formally initiated moves to suspend the branch’s Executive Committee and install an interim caretaker committee.
In a notice of requisition dated February 25, 2026, and addressed to the Branch Secretary at the High Court Complex, Keffi, the aggrieved members invoked relevant provisions of the NBA Uniform Bye-Laws (2020, as amended) and the Association’s Constitution to demand a congress to deliberate on alleged irregularities in the branch’s administration.
The signatories cited concerns stemming from the January general meeting and a subsequent emergency congress held on February 20, 2026.
According to the notice, the January meeting was postponed to February 19, but on the same day, members received an invitation for an emergency congress scheduled for noon on February 20 to nominate members of the Electoral Committee.
The requisitionists alleged that the Executive Committee convened the emergency meeting beyond the stipulated time and proceeded with nomination processes despite objections from members who questioned the legality of conducting such business at an emergency session.
They further accused the Branch Chairman of overruling a point of order by relying on constitutional provisions and reading out names for nomination into the Electoral Committee, allegedly amid protests from the floor.
Additional claims included allegations that the Branch Secretary presided over deliberations of the Constitution, Legal and Human Rights Committee despite reportedly being absent at the congress and not serving in the capacity required to do so.
The group also contended that the minutes of the February 20 meeting did not accurately reflect proceedings and were not properly circulated to members.
They alleged that individuals purportedly nominated into the Electoral Committee were sworn in after the congress despite what they described as rejection by members.
According to the notice, the current Executive Committee “cannot function and conduct an election within the time frame provided by law,” raising concerns about the absence of clear plans for an annual general meeting.
