NASA Awards Contracts to Advance Hypersonic Flight Research
NASA is focusing on advancing hypersonic flight capabilities in collaboration with the U.S. aviation sector. This initiative looks beyond supersonic speeds to push the boundaries further, aiming for hypersonic speeds that are five times the speed of sound. The agency recently granted two awards for studies exploring innovative vehicle concepts.
Unlike rockets that carry oxygen supplies for fuel combustion, NASA’s Hypersonic Technology Project prioritizes reusable hypersonic aircraft with airbreathing capabilities. These aircraft can sustain high speeds by ingesting air during flight, enabling longer periods of hypersonic cruising. The project’s primary goal is to facilitate the development and testing of airbreathing hypersonic vehicles to meet growing commercial demand and explore various applications.
In August, NASA awarded contracts to support the Hypersonic Technology Project’s research endeavors and streamline the testing and development processes. These contracts aim to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of hypersonic flight testing, showcasing NASA’s commitment to pushing boundaries and advancing aviation technologies.
