NASA is making progress on the next-generation spacesuit for the Artemis III mission to the Moon. The new suits, developed by Axiom Space, have passed a contractor-led technical review, and testing is underway. Astronauts and engineers have been simulating surface operations and tasks underwater to ensure safety and mobility during moonwalking.
The AxEMU suit, short for Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit, offers astronauts increased flexibility and mobility for collecting geology samples and performing scientific tasks on the lunar surface. It is designed with adjustable sizing options to accommodate a wider range of crew members, advanced life-support systems, and enhanced protection from the harsh lunar environment. Axiom Space is also working on specialized tools and equipment to aid astronauts in their work on the Moon.
Following Axiom Space’s completion of the technical review for the AxEMU, NASA will assess whether the spacesuit is suitable for the Artemis III mission, which aims to send American astronauts back to the Moon. A critical design sync review led by NASA will be conducted to ensure that the suit meets all necessary requirements.
