Breaking News: NASA Science Flights Venture to Improve Severe Winter Weather Warnings

NASA scientists are currently conducting a mission called the North American Upstream Feature-Resolving and Tropopause Uncertainty Reconnaissance Experiment (NURTURE). This mission aims to gather data on severe winter storms using remote sensing instruments aboard NASA’s Gulfstream III aircraft (G-III). The data collected will help improve winter weather forecasting models and potentially lead to similar observations from space. The research team departed from NASA’s Langley Research Center in Virginia, flying to Goose Bay, Canada, for a month-long mission to measure moisture, clouds, and ozone in developing winter storms.

In the next phase of the campaign, NASA plans to use a larger Boeing 777 aircraft to cover a range of 3,100 miles (5,000 kilometers) with an expanded suite of instruments. These flights will provide more extensive data on winter weather patterns for better forecasting and understanding of severe winter storms.
