Breaking News: NASA Selects Instruments for Artemis Lunar Terrain Vehicle

NASA has chosen three instruments to be sent to the Moon, with two intended for integration onto a Lunar Terrain Vehicle (LTV) and one for future orbital use. The LTV, a pivotal part of NASA’s Artemis campaign, will allow crew-driven exploration of the lunar surface for the first time in over 50 years. Capable of accommodating astronauts or being operated remotely, this vehicle aims to help NASA achieve its scientific and exploration objectives across a wide range of lunar terrain.

Two of the selected instruments for integration onto the LTV are the Artemis Infrared Reflectance and Emission Spectrometer (AIRES) and the Lunar Microwave Active-Passive Spectrometer (L-MAPS). These instruments will aid in identifying and mapping lunar minerals, volatiles, and potential locations of ice under the Moon’s surface. In addition to these instruments, the Ultra-Compact Imaging Spectrometer for the Moon (UCIS-Moon) has been chosen for future orbital usage to provide detailed context for the discoveries made by the LTV.

The data collected by these instruments will not only support human exploration efforts but also contribute to a better understanding of the Moon’s composition and history, potentially uncovering valuable resources. NASA’s collaboration with lunar terrain vehicle vendors like Intuitive Machines, Lunar Outpost, and Venturi Astrolab demonstrates the agency’s commitment to advancing exploration and scientific discovery both on the Moon and beyond.
