NASA’s Crawler-transporter 2 recently made its way to the Vehicle Assembly Building at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. This giant crawler will be responsible for transporting NASA’s SLS rocket and Orion spacecraft to Launch Complex 39B for the upcoming Artemis II mission. Scheduled for no later than April 2026, this mission will involve Commander Reid Wiseman, Pilot Victor Glover, and Mission Specialist Christina Koch from NASA, as well as Mission Specialist Jeremy Hansen from the Canadian Space Agency.
For over 50 years, crawler-transporters have been vital in moving rockets and spacecraft to launch pads at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center. These massive machines, each the size of a baseball infield, are powered by locomotive and large electrical power generator engines. Crawler-transporter 2 is crucial for the Artemis missions, which aim to launch astronauts into space for future explorations.
