Breaking News: New Volunteer Data from 143 Observatories Unveils the 2024 Total Solar Eclipse

Volunteers across the United States joined NASA’s Eclipse Megamovie citizen science project to photograph the solar eclipse on April 8, 2024. The Eclipse Megamovie team has now released a groundbreaking dataset from this effort, featuring more than an hour and a half of observations of the solar corona. This dataset, comprising 52,469 photographs from 143 observatories, is available for public access and offers researchers valuable insights into solar jet dynamics and plume development. The data is categorized into three levels of processing, from raw to calibrated, using the standard astronomical format FITS. This collaborative project, spearheaded by Sonoma State University, the University of California, Berkeley, and NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, showcases the power of community engagement in scientific endeavors.

Thank you to all the volunteers who participated in this important initiative! To access the complete dataset and learn more about this exciting project, visit the Eclipse Megamovie website at https://eclipsemegamovie.org/database.
