NASA’s Perseverance Mars rover proudly displays the United States flag on an aluminum plate at the base of its mast. The image of this plate, captured by the rover’s WATSON camera on June 28, 2025, showcases this patriotic symbol on the Red Planet.
Designed as part of the SHERLOC instrument, the Wide Angle Topographic Sensor for Operations and eNgineering (WATSON) was created by Malin Space Science Systems (MSSS) in San Diego and is a collaboration between MSSS and NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California, managed by Caltech. The Perseverance rover continues to conduct groundbreaking science exploration on Mars.
