On February 4, 2026, NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory captured a powerful solar flare erupting from the Sun. Solar flares are intense bursts of energy that can impact radio communications, electric power grids, navigation signals, and even pose risks to spacecraft and astronauts. The flare in the image was classified as an X4.2 flare, with the X-class indicating the most intense flares and the number specifying its strength.
The Solar Dynamics Observatory constantly monitors the Sun’s properties and solar activity to help us better understand the Sun’s magnetic changes. By studying solar flares and their effects on our planet and the space around us, the observatory assists us in preparing for and mitigating potential disruptions that these solar events can cause.
